Museo della Liquirizia "Giorgio Amarelli", Contrada Amarelli, Rossano Stazione, Province of Cosenza, Italy

Museum of Licorice “Amarelli”

The idea of commercializing the underground branches of licorice, a plant that grows abundantly in the latifundia of the Ionian coast of Calabria, dates back to the 1500s. In 1731, to enhance the use of this product, the Amarelli family started a proto-industrial plant to turn the roots of the plant into juice. Thus were born licorice, black, shiny, the joy of children but also of adults who enjoy the pleasures of a healthy and natural life. After three centuries, Amarelli, which is part of the Les Hénokiens association, made up of 40 bicentennial family businesses from around the world, is still producing pure and chewy licorice, candies, pebbles, chocolates and liqueurs, always with licorice. To tell this story, the family opened the “Giorgio Amarelli” Licorice Museum, which was awarded the Guggenheim Enterprise & Culture Prize and celebrated by the Italian Postal Service with a postage stamp from the thematic series “Italy's Artistic and Cultural Heritage,” issued in 3,500,000 copies.

Every day it is possible to visit the museum and follow the production cycle from root to licorice. Visits, free of charge, are guided and must be booked by calling 0983 511 219 or writing to: info@museodellaliquirizia.it
